JPEGsnoop is a free Windows application that examines and decodes the inner details of JPEG and MotionJPEG AVI files. It can also be used to analyze the source of an image to test its authenticity.
Extract embedded JPEGs — can be used to extract thumbnails, hidden JPEG files, as well as frames from Motion JPEG AVI files.
VirtualDub is free, but made more for .avi and doesn’t have quite as much ease of use.
VideoReDo is shareware, easy to use, and made for .mpg.

This is a good time to use Google (or your favorite search engine). A google search for “video editing shareware” reveals many links. Here are 2 of them:
You can also search for ‘mpg edit’ or any combinations of those words. Freeware could also be used.
I personally use Adobe products to edit my videos. I would check Adobe Premiere Elements. There is even a free trial on there site.

I just tested in Youtube and you can do a screen captureof movies, then paste them into any photo editing program or even MS Paint, both of which is on every computer I believe, and it works fine. You then have to crop the photo from the background, but that’s pretty easy to do. That would all be free, and not hard.
Computer_Wiz, regarding your answer “a google moment”:
Allthe software you suggested are movie editing and not stills extracting.
Can you be more specific of what function in each one is the “stills extract” function?
